The boys and girls that are born in the current month each have their own day where they go out and celebrate. Our group was lucky enough to celebrate with the girls on their August Birthday Outing. It includes a trip to the arcade, then to the mall where they go into a music store and listen to music for an hour, a trip to walmart where they get only 8 reais to spend, go see a movie and then enjoy a dinner out. This might sound like any other day out with our friends, various activities we might do but to them this is their big outing for the YEAR. Jordan, Emily, Natalie, and Leslie joined the girls for the whole day. The rest of the team worked on painting the campus and met up with the birthday girls at the mall.
It really put things in to perspective for our group when we accompanied the girls to walmart and they had the 8 reais (less than 5 US Dollars) to buy candy with. After they spent their birthday money they wanted to share their new treats with us. We kept saying "No, no they are for you!" but they insisted. These girls wanted to share what little they had and it definitely touched our hearts. This birthday outing memory will be with us forever :)
